Baseball Picks Up Non-Conference Win Over CSI

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (April 24, 2018) - Seniors Reynaldo Diaz and Christopher Franco knocked in all four runs as the FDU baseball team topped Staten Island 4-3 Tuesday.

The Devils improve to 10-23 on the season, and will host Misericordia at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Making his first career start, senior Walter Pennett allowed a pair of baserunners in the first inning, but also notched two strikeouts. The senior worked a perfect second, and saw the Devils give him run support in the third. Junior Ian Havran walked to lead off the inning, and moved 180 feet on a stolen base and a balk. After a pair of strikeouts, Franco homered to left, his third of the season.

The Dolphins cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, as Jett Nouvertne hit a solo homer. Pennett allowed a double with two down, but a fly out to left ended the inning. The senior surrendered a lead off hit in the fourth, but senior David Wilbur nabbed the runner trying to steal to end the frame.

FDU extended their lead in the fifth. Havran once again walked to lead off the inning. Diaz doubled to left center to plate Havran, and Franco followed suit, switching places with Diaz with a ribbie double.

Staked to a 4-1 lead, the senior made it through the fifth before a runner crossed home in the sixth. Reliever Chris Portelli entered in the seventh, but allowed a run in the eighth allowing the lead to cut in half to 4-3. The junior rebounded tossed a perfect ninth to collect his first career save.

Pennett picked up the win, giving up two runs in six innings while striking out a career high six hitters. Diaz and Franco combined to go 4-for-7 with two runs scored.
