HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (April 22, 2018) - The FDU softball team picked up 6-2 and 6-1 victories over Centenary on Sunday afternoon.
With the sweep, the Devils improve to 16-16 on the season.
GAME 1: FDU-Florham 6, Centenary 2
After a scoreless two innings, FDU broke through with an unearned tally in the third. Sophomore
Gabby Young singled to left and stole second. With one out, senior
Taylor Torre reached on an error, allowing Young to scoot home.
The Devils increased their lead by two in the fifth. Freshman
Taylor Tobey reached on an infield single and moved to second on a single by Torre. The rookie moved up to third on a fly-out, and a perfectly executed double steal by the Taylor's allowed Tobey to score. Torre would follow her home on a single by junior
Courtney Rohde after stealing third.
The Cyclones got a run back in the fifth inning, as Jessica Hewitt doubled to score a run. Torre was plunked with a pitch leading off the seventh and was immediately brought in by a triple from senior
Rebecca DeCarlo. Rohde knocked in her second run of the day with a single through the box, plating DeCarlo,
Centenary got another run in the seventh, as the first three hitters all reached base. With runners on second and third, freshman
Kaleigh Oplinger got a fly-out, and the runner on third tried to score. Tobey fired a perfect strike to nab the runner and close out the game.
Senior
Michelle Mangini went 3-for-4, while Young, Torre and Rohde all had two hits. As a unit, the team pounded out 15 hits.
GAME 2: FDU-Florham 6, Centenary 1
FDU notched a pair of runs in the top of the second, taking an early 2-0 lead. Mangini and freshman
Francesca Shipe each singled with one out, and moved up a base on a passed ball. Senior
Frannie Jarin grounded out but scored Mangini, while sophomore
Tara Morash singled up the middle to score Shipe.
Sophomore
Megan Zaccario loaded the bases on a single and two walks in the bottom of the second, but got a harmless pop-up to third to end the inning. Centenary cut the lead in half in the fourth, as a single up the middle knocked a run home. Torre tripled to left in the fifth, and was driven in on an infield hit from Rohde, extending the Devils edge.
Freshman
Linda Rizzo entered in the fifth and allowed just two hits over final three frames. She was aided by a 4-3 double play which ended the fifth inning. The Devils closed out the scoring with three in the seventh. Tobey reached on an error to lead off the inning, and was brought home on a double Torre double. Two hitters later, Rohde delivered her fourth RBI of the day with a single to right. Finally, Mangini delivered a triple into right field, allowing Rohde to score from first.
Torre, Rohde, Mangini and Shipe all had two hits, while Torre scored twice.
FDU will return home for Senior Day on Saturday, when they host Misericordia beginning at 1 p.m.
