MADISON, N.J. (April 21, 2018) - The FDU women's tennis team grinded out a hard-fought 7-2 victory over Misericordia Saturday afternoon.
The Devils moved to 10-3 on the season, remaining perfect within the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom at 5-0. With the victory, the Devils clinched a first-round home playoff game on May 1.
"I think we were came out a little nervous today," said head coach
Tom Battaglia. "Losing our captain to an injury probably weighed heavy on our minds but we settled down just in time."
Freshman
Kira Bradley and sophomore
Mia Capozzoli gutted out an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles while Misericordia earned an 8-4 win at second doubles. The duo of
Nicole DelRosso and
Christine Kenny found themselves trailing 7-2 at No. 1 doubles. Facing the challenge of going down 2-1 entering singles action, DelRosso and Kenny stormed back, winning seven straight games to win 9-7.
"That honestly changed the momentum of the match," Battaglia said. "Down 2-1 in doubles is tough to come back from. It took the edge off for singles and really allowed us to go out there and just play."
Feeding off the energy of the doubles win, DelRosso earned a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. Junior
Allyson Wolf cruised to a straight set 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, while Bradley topped her opponent at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-2.
Capozzoli continued her hot streak, notching a 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) victory at No. 5 singles before freshman
Brooke Dorsey claimed a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 6 singles.
FDU is back in action on Thursday, hosting the Pratt Institute.
