MADISON, N.J. (April 21, 2018) - The FDU baseball team was topped by Wilkes 8-5 and 7-4 on Senior Day Saturday.
GAME 1: Wilkes 8, FDU-Florham 5
After a scoreless first inning, Wilkes broke through with two runs in the second on a single to center by Tyler Walther. The Devils loaded the bases in the second, as seniors
David Wilbur and
Joseph Bonaccorso singled while freshman
Joe Moskowitz walked. Freshman
Matt Nodoro and junior
Ian Havran each walked with the bags full, tying the game.
Senior
Garrett Ruoff continued the inning with a sacrifice fly that was dropped, allowing the bases to stay loaded. Senior
Reynaldo Diaz had the big blow, a two-run double to left center that reached the wall.
The Colonels responded with two runs in the third off of senior
Kenny Carrier before knotting the game at five with an unearned tally in the fourth. Carrier escaped further damage in the fourth by inducing a 4-3 double play.
Wilkes took control over the final three frames, scoring a run in each of those innings to win the first game 8-5.
Diaz was the lone Devils with multiple RBI's, while Carrier had six strikeouts over five innings of work.
GAME 2: Wilkes 7, FDU-Florham 4
The Colonels scored a run in their first at bat, as an error by Moskowitz allowed the first run to score. FDU answered back with a tally of their in the first. Havran walked on four pitches and swiped second base. Three batters later, senior
Christopher Franco dropped a single down the left line, scoring Havran.
After Wilkes regained the lead with an unearned tally in the second, the visitors tallied three more in the third, opening up a 5-1 lead. The Devils, who had just one hit through the first 3 1/3 frames, chipped away in the home fourth. With a 1-0 count, Franco homered to left field, barely clearing the arm of the jumping left fielder.
Wilkes notched runs in both the fifth and sixth innings off of freshman
Jeremy Bello and junior
Brandon Lopez, extending their lead to 7-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Havran had a six pitch at bat that resulted in a lead off walk and moved to third on a wild pitch and groundout. Diaz grounded out to third which allowed Havran to score.
Lopez escaped trouble in the seventh unscathed before the Devils attempted a comeback in their final at bat. Ruoff reached on a fielder's choice while pinch-hitter
AJ Yurista walked with two outs. Nodoro hit a pop up that was dropped, allowing Ruoff to cross home. Havran loaded the bases with a single, but senior
David Wilbur flied out to right to end the game.
Franco had two of the three hits in the game, while driving in two. Bello struck out four in four innings, while Lopez struck out one over three.
Prior to the game, FDU baseball honored its 10 seniors in a pregame ceremony,
FDU is back in action tomorrow afternoon, hosting Eastern at 12 p.m.
