MADISON, N.J. (April 14, 2018) - The FDU baseball team was topped 9-3 and 5-1 by King's on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils drop to 8-17, with a 2-9 record within the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom.
GAME 1, King's 9, FDU-Florham 3
The Monarchs did their damage in the second and third frames, putting up all nine runs over those two innings. In the second, King's scored seven times, with only one extra base hit. Junior
Joseph DeFeo entered with two outs in the inning, and retired the first batter he faced on a strikeout.
DeFeo was saddled for two final runs in the third, as the first two hitters singled before a double down the line in left brought in a run. After the third inning, DeFeo allowed just two additional baserunners over the course of the final four innings.
Senior
Reynaldo Diaz led off the fourth with a home run to left field, his fifth long-ball of the season. The Devils had two runners on in the fifth, but a 9-6 double play ended the threat.
With the team down to their final at bat, the Devils strung together a little rally. Senior
David Wilbur worked a one out walk before freshman Joe Moscowitz singled through the left side. Freshman
Matt Nodoro loaded the with a bloop single to left-center, while junior
Ian Havran bounced a singled through the right side, scoring Wilbur and Moscowitz. After a pitching change, freshman
Nate Peacock hit into a game-ending double play with runners on first and second.
Diaz was 2-for-3 with two extra-base hits, while Havran knocked in pair. DeFeo went 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three.
GAME 2: KING'S 5, FDU-Florham 1
The Monarchs jumped on starter
Jeremy Bello in their first at-bat, pushing two runs across on a single by Kyle Lupas. Senior
Jack Paladino doubled with one out in the second while Moscowitz walked two batters later, but a groundout to second ended the inning.
Peacock reached on a double with one out in the third before Diaz advanced him to third with a single. Senior
Christopher Franco bounced into a double play to once again the threat. King's took advantage of back-to-back errors in the fourth, tacking on a run to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Moscoqwitz led off the fifth with a single right-center, but was doubled off as a hot-shot by
Kevin Smiegocki was snared by the first basemen. The first basemen got up an stepped on first to complete the double play.
A leadoff homer by Sean Padden in the sixth gave the Monarchs a 4-0 lead, but FDU chipped away in their at bat in the sixth. Back-to-back errors with one down had runners on first and second, and freshman
AJ Yurista singled to put the Devils on the board.
King's notched an unearned tally in the top of the seventh, leaving FDU with one chance to make a comeback. Moscowitz reached on an error to leadoff and moved to second on a Nodoro single. After two outs, Diaz worked a 10 pitch at bat before drawing a walk. With the bases loaded, King's reliever Chris Lupole got a strikeout on a questionable called third strike to end the game.
Bello went the distance, allowing five runs on 11 hits without a walk. Peacock went 2-for-3 with a double in the setback.
The Devils are back it again tomorrow, hosting Eastern in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
