Baseball Falters Against No. 12 TCNJ

EWING, N.J. (April 17, 2018) - Senior Christopher Franco hit a two-run home run, but the FDU baseball team suffered a 14-4 setback against No. 12 TCNJ Tuesday.

The Devils drop to 8-18 on the season, while TCNJ moves to 20-5. FDU will remain on the road tomorrow, taking on Drew in the Battle of Madison Ave. That game will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Dodge Field in downtown Madison.

With two outs in the second, the host Lions opened scoring. A double to right center coupled with a balk had a runner on third, and Danny Borup singled to drive in the first run of the game.

TCNJ sent 13 men to the plate in the third, collecting eight runs on eight hits. Of the eight hits, seven were singles. Chris Portelli entered in relief earning a strikeout to end the inning. The Lions tacked on a run in the fourth off a ribbie double from Ryan Fischer.

The Devils broke through for a tally in the fifth. Sophomore Michael Tufano walked to lead off, and moving to third on a pair of groundouts. On a wild pitch, Tufano scooted home, putting the guests on the scoreboard.

The Lions added three more runs in the sixth, as Borup and Zach Shindler notched RBI singles. TCNJ closed out the scoring in the seventh, with Fischer delivering another RBI knock.

The Devils bats came alive in the eighth, scoring three times in the frame. Freshman Matt Nodoro led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by junior Ian Havran. Two batters later, freshman AJ Yurista delivered a fly ball to left, scoring Nodoro. Franco then came up and blasted a shot to left field for his first homer of the season.

Havran and Franco each had two hits while sophomore Arjun Alwis fanned in his inning of relief.
