Baseball Takes Down NJCU 10-3

MADISON, N.J. (April 10, 2018) - The FDU baseball team collected 13 hits en route to a 10-3 victory over New Jersey City University Tuesday afternoon.

The Devils improve to 8-13, while the Gothic Knights dropped to 12-8.

After a scoreless, FDU broke through with a run in the second. Freshman Chris Ciancimino walked and swiped second before coming around to score on a single from sophomore Michael Tufano.

The Devils tacked on five more runs over the next two innings.Senior Garrett Ruoff reached on a one-out double to left in the second and was driven in by freshman AJ Yurista's single. With two down, senior David Wilbur kept the innings going with a single that plated Yurista.

Sophomore Billy Podurgiel was hit with a pitch leading off the fourth and advanced to second on a balk. With one out, junior Ian Havran tripled to dead-center field, and was knocked home on Reynaldo Diaz's single. Wilbur reached on an error to once again score Yurista who drew a two out walk.

Freshman Jonathan Weitzman made his first collegiate start, earning the win with four scoreless innings. Junior Brandon Lopez entered in the fifth, but was touched up for an unearned run in his two innings.

The Devils capped off their scoring in the sixth, putting up a four spot. Singles by Ben Dranow, Yurista and Diaz started the frame off, before a failed pick-off attempt allowed Dranow to scoot home. Tufano walked to reload the bags before Podurgiel reached on an additional error. The big blow was a two-run single from freshman Matt Nodoro, scoring Tufano and Diaz.

The Gothic Knights attempted a small comeback in the ninth, scoring two runs off of Will Lapham before southpaw Chris Portelli was summoned from the bullpen. With runners on second and third, the NJCU batter lined a ball that seemed like it would be two runs. But Podurgiel dove and made a great catch before doubling off the runner at second. Portelli got a harmless flyball to end the inning and the game.

Weitzman fanned four, while senior Walter Pennett struck out three in two innings. Tufano and Nodoro each had two RBI's, while Dranow went 2-for-2 off the bench.

FDU is back in action tomorrow, traveling to Eastern for a 3:30 p.m. conference matchup in St. Davids, Pa.
