PURCHASE, N.Y. (March 31, 2018) - The FDU softball team fell to Manhattanville College 6-0 and 5-1 Saturday afternoon.
The Devils drop to 77-11 on the season even up at 2-2 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom.
Game 1: Manhattanville 6, FDU 0
Sophomore
Gabby Young started off the game with a single and stole second. After advancing on a groundout Young was unable to score, as the next three hitters were retired. Manhattanville wasted little time, scoring twice in the bottom of the first.
After the hosts added a run in the in the second, freshman
Kaleigh Oplinger entered and set the Valiants down in order in the third, but surrendered a solo home run in the fourth. The rookie settled down, retiring the next eight hitters she faced.
The Devils threatened in the top of the sixth, as Young singled up the middle and pinch hitter
Nicole Casale walked. A double-steal put runners on second and third, but a pop-up to first ended the threat. The Valiants closed the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Young went 2-for-3, while senior
Rebecca DeCarlo had the other hit in game one. Freshman
Linda Rizzo fanned four in two innings of work.
Game 2: Manhattanville 5, FDU 1
Freshman
Abbey Scarengelli was perfect through two innings, and the Devils once again put two runners in scoring position in the second. DeCarlo walked and senior
Michelle Mangini was hit by pitch. A groundout and strikeout ended the frame for the Valiants without any runs.
Singles by senior
Taylor Torre and DeCarlo with no outs in the fourth helped start the Devils lone rally of the game. After a strikeout, Mangini doubled to right, scoring Torre. Scarengelli escaped a first and second, one-out jam in the fourth by getting a 5-3 double play to end the inning.
The Valiants scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, as the leadoff batter reached on an error. She would come around to score on a single which cut the lead in half. Manhattanville took the lead for in the sixth, scoring four times.
DeCarlo went 2-for-3 while Scarengelli took the tough loss, throwing 5 2/3 innings. The rookie allowed six hits and three runs with no walks.
FDU is back in action Tuesday, traveling to Eastern for a twinbill beginning at 3 p.m.
