MADISON, N.J. (March 28, 2018) - Senior
David Stewart notched his 100th career point, but the FDU men's lacrosse team fell in the waning seconds 10-9 against Drew Wednesday.
The Devils drop to 2-4 with the setback, while Drew improves to 2-6.
The visiting Rangers built a 2-0 lead six minutes in, as Kevin Goettlich netted both tallies. The Devils controlled the remainder of the period, firing six straight at Drew net with less than two minutes left in the opening period. FDU was unable to convert, and the Rangers tallied an additional goal 2:47 into the second period.
Needing one point to reach the century mark,
David Stewart put the Devils on the board with just over five minutes left in the second. After Goettlich completed his hat-trick, sophomore
Mike Gartner forced a turnover and senior
Andrew Dakan scooped up the ground ball. Junior
Will Charbonneau found sophomore
Pat Stewart who cut the deficit to two with just six seconds left in the half.
Drew scored midway through the third to bring the lead back to three, but sophomore
Adam Reifer made a huge stop with 23 ticks left in the frame, allowing FDU to clear the zone. With the successful clear, sophomore
John Belanger beat the clock, scoring with eight seconds left as FDU went into the fourth trailing 5-3.
The visitors tallied the first three goals of the fourth quarter, grabbing an 8-3 lead with 9:34 left in the game.
David Stewart helped bring the Devils closer by netting two straight, the second with the man-up with 8:08 left. Goettlich brought the lead back four with 4:52 left, but the Devils continued to dig deep and did not go down without a fight.
Just 41 seconds after the Ranger goal, Belanger converted a
Drew Bukowiec feed and
Pat Stewart potted his of the game with 3:14 left. The Devils defense forced a big turnover on the defensive end, which led to a successful clear and a timeout. The timeout set up
David Stewart, who scored his fourth of the game bringing the team within one.
Senior
Will Kenny won the ensuing face-off, and
Pat Stewart found Belanger, who ripped a shot past the Drew keeper to even the game at nine with 39 seconds left. Momentum seemed to be in the Devils favor, but a face-off violation gave Drew the final possession.
With just one second on the clock, Seamus O'Connor bounced a shot past the Devils keeper, giving Drew the one goal win. With the victory, the Rangers claimed the battle of Madison Ave. for the second straight season.
Reifer made eight saves, while Kenny had seven ground balls and went 12-of-22 on the draw. Gartner forced three turnovers defensively, while the Stewart brothers combined for six goals, two assists and 15 shots.
FDU continues its home-stand next Wednesday, hosting Stockton at 7 p.m.
