AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 12, 2018) - The FDU baseball earned its third straight win, topping the University of Minnesota-Morris 4-2 Monday afternoon.
The Devils moved to 3-4 on the season, while the Tigers fell to 0-2.
Senior
Brad Norris escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the first by getting a soft groundout to third base. Classmate
Nick DeAngelis Jr. led off the bottom of the first with a single, and freshman
Nate Peacock moved him to over with a perfect bunt single. Senior
Reynaldo Diaz bounced a ball to short, but an errant throw allowed DeAngelis to score. Sophomore
AJ Yurista continued his hot start to the season, singling up the middle to score Diaz.
The Tigers tied the game with sacrifice flies in the second and third innings, leveling the game at two. Norris settled down, getting through the fourth and fifth without allowing a base-runner.
Yurista gave the Devils the lead in the bottom of the fourth, delivering a triple to right center field. The throw went into the FDU dugout, allowing Yurista to score. After senior
Joseph Bonaccorso singled and swiped second, freshman
Matt Nodoro knocked him with a single to right field.
Norris put runners on the corners with no one out in the sixth, but a line-drive to the hot corner was snared by Yurista. The sophomore took a few steps and stepped on the bag, doubling up the runner on third. Norris rebounded by getting a strikeout to end the threat.
A Tiger walk and error had men on first and second with one out in the eighth, forcing FDU into a conference on the mound. The meeting worked, as Norris got the final two outs unscathed.
Bonaccorso was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while Yurista collected a pair of hits. Norris fanned three over eight innings, allowing six hits and three walks with two runs scoring to earn the victory. Yurista collected his first career save, allowing two batters to reach in the final frame.
FDU is back in action tomorrow, taking on Keene State at 9:30 a.m.
