AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 13, 2018) - The FDU baseball team suffered a 14-6 setback at the hands of Keene State Tuesday afternoon.
The Devils dropped to 3-5 with the result. The two sides were originally supposed to play on Saturday, but weather issues in the Northeast forced the game to be moved to today.
The Owls scored once in the first and three times in the second before the Devils were able to chip away and get one back. With two down in the second, freshman
Matt Nodoro singled in sophomore
AJ Yurista, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
Back-to-back Keene State doubles made the score 6-1 in the third, but sophomore
Anthony Cuomo settled down, shutting the Owls down in the fourth and fifth frames. Cuomo retired the final out of the fifth by getting a strikeout that caught the batter looking.
FDU loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, scoring an unearned run on a passed ball. The damage was limited, as the Owls ended the inning with a punchout. Keene State exploded for four runs in the sixth, the big blow coming on a bases-clearing triple.
Nodoro led off the seventh with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly from senior
Reynaldo Diaz. The Devils added an additional unearned run on a passed ball, cutting the gap to six. The teams traded runs in the eighth before Keene added the final three scores in the ninth.
Yurista had a big day at the dish, going 4-for-5 with an RBI, while junior
Kevin Smiegocki and Nodoro each had two hits. Cuomo struck out seven in the 5 1/3 innings he worked, allowing just one walk.
The Devils will take on RPI tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
