CLERMONT, Fla. (March 11, 2018) – The FDU softball team topped Delaware Valley but fell to the Coast Guard Academy during Day One action in Florida Sunday.
The Devils are now 1-5 on the season with the split.
FDU-Florham 4, Delaware Valley 1
Freshman
Abbey Scarengelli made her first career start, and ran into trouble in the first inning. After retiring the first two batters on four pitches, the bases became loaded on two singles and an eight pitch walk. The rookie escaped the jam, getting a lazy fly ball to center.
The Devils struck for a run in the third, as sophomore
Annamarie Santangelo singled with one down and moved to second on a wild pitch. Senior
Taylor Torre singled to left, plating Santangelo.
Scarengelli continued to toss up zeros through four, and saw the team double their lead in the home half of the fourth.
With one out, senior
Rebecca DeCarlo laced a double that reached the left field wall. After a pop out, sophomore
Tara Morash dunked in a single to left, scoring DeCarlo from second.
Delaware Valley scored unearned run in the top of fifth, as the Aggies scored on a fielder's choice after an error.
Sophomore
Megan Zaccario entered in the sixth and promptly struck out the first two hitters on eight pitches. The
Devils notched a pair of insurance runs in the sixth, with freshman
Taylor Tobey knocking in a pair with a double to right center field.
The Aggies went down 1-2-3 in the seventh, with Scarengelli earning her first collegiate victory and Zaccario picking up the save.
Torre had two hits, including a double, while Scarengelli tossed five innings allowing just one walk with three strikeouts.
Coast Guard 4, FDU-Florham 2
The Coast Guard took the lead in the top of the first, as the second batter in the order doubled and then came around to score on a throwing error. The Bears threatened in the second, but FDU turned the unconventional 6-3-5 double play to end the frame.
FDU had runners on base in both the fourth and fifth innings, but were unable to capitalize. Both teams were limited to two hits each through four and a half innings, as freshmen
Kaleigh Oplinger and
Linda Rizzo were strong on the mound for the Devils.
The Bears added a run in the fifth on a quirky play. After a walk and a runner on third, the batter kept running and a rundown ensued. On a throw to second, the runner on third broke for home and beat the return throw, doubling the Coast Guard lead.
The Devils cut the lead in half during the sixth inning, as Tobey led off with a walk and Santangelo sacrificing her to second. After a groundout, Torre smashed a triple down the right field line, scoring the rookie Tobey. Torre was stranded at third as a lineout to second ended the inning.
The Coast Guard extended their lead in the bottom sixth, scoring a pair of unearned runs. The first tally came across on an error after an infield fly rule pop-up was dropped, while the second scored on a passed ball.
FDU had one final chance, sending the tying run up to bat with one down in the final inning. Senior
Frannie Jarin and freshman
Dani Sames singled, with Jarin scoring on a bloop single by Tobey. Tobey and Sames each moved up a base on an error by the left-fielder, putting the tying run in scoring position. The Devils could get no closer, as a groundout to shortstop ended the comeback hopes.
Oplinger and Rizzo combined to allow just one earned run and four hits over the six innings in the circle.
FDU is back in action tomorrow, taking on Gordon College and the University of Northwestern (Minn.) beginning at 9 a.m.
