CLERMONT, Fla. (March 12, 2018) - The FDU softball team knocked off Gordon 9-7 before falling to the University of Northwestern (MN.) 9-3 Monday morning.
With the split, the Devils are now 2-6.
FDU-Florham 9, Gordon 7
FDU surrendered a run in the first inning, as the first two hitters reached on infield singles. With runners on second and third, the Fighting Scots produced a run with an RBI groundout. The Devils rebounded in the third, grabbing their first lead of the day.
Freshman
Taylor Tobey doubled to lead off the inning, and was knocked in on a single from
Annamarie Santangelo.After loading the bags, freshman
Nicole Casale was hit with a pitch, knocking in a run the hard way.
A solo home run in the third by Gordon tied things at two, and the Fighting Scots grabbed a 4-2 lead on an error and run-scoring double. FDU seemingly broke the game open in the fifth, tacking on five runs. Senior
Taylor Torre doubled and was knocked in by a
Michelle Mangini single. Mangini, who advanced to second on the throw home, scored on a double by classmate
Rebecca DeCarlo.
After a walk, freshman
Abbey Scarengelli delivered the big blow. In her first at-bat, the rookie hit a pinch-hit, two-run double to left center. Tobey completed the inning with an RBI single to left.
DeCarlo added to the Devils lead in the sixth, belting a two-run home run to left center. The Fighting Scots made things interesting in the final inning, as a three-run home run brought the gap to just two runs. The Devils were able to get the final two outs before Gordon was able to complete the comeback, winning their second game of the trip.
DeCarlo and Tobey each recorded three hits, while sophomore
Megan Zaccario earned the win, striking out two in four innings.
University of Northwestern (MN.) 9, FDU-Florham 3
The Devils found themselves down one at bat in game, as the University of Northwestern (mn.) took advantage of three errors, scoring four runs. They added to their lead with a run scoring bunt single in the second.
The Eagles pitching held FDU hitless through the first two and two thirds innings, making several nice defensive plays. Tobey broke the no-hitter with an infield hit, but was unable to come around and score. UNW would tally another unearned run in the fourth, scoring on a single after the leadoff hitter reached on an error.
After the Eagles made the score 6-0, the Devils started to try and make a comeback. Senior
Michelle Mangini lined a single to third base, and DeCarlo blasted her second home run of the day, a deep drive to left field. The Devils got within three in the fifth, as
Gabby Young knocked in
Dani Sames. Sames led the fifth with a single and moved into scoring position on a bunt.
UNW tallied insurance in both the sixth and seventh innings, including a solo home run in the sixth. The Devils threatened in the sixth, as Torre and classmate
Frannie Jarin reached base with no outs. They couldn't push a run across however, as an infield fly pop-up and double play ended the rally.
Sophomore
Kaylee Fish singled in her at-bat of the season, while Scarengelli worked 5 1/3 innings of relief, striking out one.
After a day off, the Devils resume play Wednesday with games against Bethany and Mount St. Joseph University beginning at 9 a.m.
