AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 11, 2018) - The FDU baseball team allowed a mere three runs in 9-1 and 7-2 victories over Iowa Wesleyan Sunday afternoon.
The Devils are now 2-4 on the season with the sweep, while Iowa Wesleyan dropped to 5-3.
GAME 1: FDU-Florham 9, Iowa Wesleyan 1
Neither side could punch a run across during the first three innings, as FDU senior starter
Kenny Carrier struck out the side in the third inning. The Devils got on the board in the fourth, starting with a one-out single from senior
David Wilbur. Wilbur moved to third via a wild pitch and error, and would come around to score as senior
Nick DeAngelis Jr. singled to left field.
After Carrier picked up two more punchouts in the fourth, the Devils exploded for eight runs in the fifth. Seniors
Reynaldo Diaz and
Christopher Franco notched hits, and freshman
AJ Yurista delivered the big blast, a three-run home run to left field. A pitching change resulted in the first out, but FDU loaded the bases on a single and two walks. DeAngelis came up and singled to right, plating
Kevin Smiegocki and Wilbur.
The Devils weren't done, as senior
Joseph Bonaccorso got into the action with a run-scoring flyout. Diaz than delivered his second hit of the inning, a home run to left field. Carrier's day ended in the fifth, as the first two runners reached base. The Tigers scratched across an unearned run on a passed ball, but that would be all the scoring the team would allow in the game. Freshman
Rob McGuinness entered in the bottom of the seventh, and struck out the final three hitters of the game.
Carrier,
Arjun Alwis and McGuinness combined for 11 strikeouts during over the seven frames, as Diaz went 3-for-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Smiegocki and freshman
Matt Nodoro each walked twice, while Yurista knocked in three.
GAME 2: FDU-Florham 7, Iowa Wesleyan 2
Freshman
Jeremy Bello started for the Devils, and loaded the bases with one out. The rookie escaped the jam by getting a tapper back to the mound to end the frame. Yurista continued his hot start, driving in the games first run with a run-scoring groundout to open the first inning for the Devils. Bonaccorso came up next and drove in two more runs.
Neither side budged over the next few innings, as Bello put runners on base in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. The Tigers nicked Bello for a run in the fifth, as a balk allowed the run to cross the plate. The Devils answered back with two during their turn in the fifth. After junior
Ian Havran scored on an error, Yurista delivered a sac fly, scoring Diaz.
Yurista and Bonaccorso tallied the final RBI's on the day for FDU, registering a single and walk respectively. The Tigers got one more back in the bottom of the final inning on a solo home run, but could not get closer.
Bello went the distance in his first collegiate start, allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out four. Yurista knocked in three again, while Bonaccorso had two hits. The top three hitters of DeAngelis, Havran and Diaz walked six times and scored all seven runs.
FDU is back in action tomorrow, taking on the University of Minnesota Morris at 3:30 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Park.
