MADISON, N.J. (February 24, 2018) - The FDU men's tennis team was knocked off by Drew 8-1 in the spring opener Saturday afternoon.
The lone winner on the day was Chris Fiorenza at No. 6 singles. Fiorenza, who claimed a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Player of the Week honor in the fall, won his match 8-4. The other close match came at No. 4, where freshman Tyler Schacher was bumped off in a close 8-6 set.
The duo of Schacher and Steven Serras hung around at No. 2 doubles, forcing match point at one instance. They eventually succumbed in the tie-breaker, but left new Head Coach very impressed by the duo.
"On the men's side our third doubles combination of Steven and Tyler almost pulled out a win," said Head Coach Tom Battaglia." "They had match point in the tiebreak (6-5) and Steven hit a great overhead that they returned. It ended up being the game changer and drew won the next two points to close it out."
"Overall I'm happy with the effort. They are a close unit and are prepared to work even harder in practice. We had just a few practices to get ready for Drew and I've already seen tremendous improvement. I'm looking forward to our Pennsylvania trip. The team is eager for more and that's all I can ask for as a coach."
