Men's Basketball Notches 89-87 Win Over King's

WILKES BARRE, Pa. (February 17, 2018) – The FDU men's basketball team ended the season a high-note, topping King's 89-87 Saturday afternoon.

The Devils opened the game with seven of the first nine markers, before the Monarchs responded with a 13-1 run over the next four minutes. Freshman Jimmy Olaniyi stopped the rally, corralling his own miss and converting a layup.

Senior Veon Lassiter hit a layup to kick-start a 7-0 Devils run, which bring the hosts lead to just two points.
After senior Ryan Rigby hit from behind the arc, the Monarchs went back ahead courtesy of a 7-0 spurt. Freshman Shawn Smith stopped the run, but Tyler Millian of King's scored six straight for the hosts, stretching the lead to double-figures. FDU ended the half with seven straight points, capped off with a lineup from junior Edwin Lopez with seven seconds remaining.

Olaniyi extended the run to 10 before junior Darren Davy evened the game with layup early in the second period. Despite King's regaining the lead, Smith and sophomore Rajaan Dixon each hit from behind the arc giving the Devils a three-point edge.

Courtesy of a 9-3 run, King's evened the game at 64 with 11:22 left, hitting five from the charity stripe during the run. The Devils took advantage of fouls, going on a 13-0 run with Dixon connecting on back-to-back deep three's. King's refused to go away, cutting the game to a two-possession game thanks to an 8-2 rally.

Junior Darren Davy took over in the latter stages of the game, scoring five straight points to go over the 20 points marker on the afternoon. The Monarchs once again closed to within a single possession, this time going on a 9-0 run to close to 84-81 with 1:52 remaining. King's went for a layup to make it a one-point game, but Lassiter swatted the attempt to deny the layup.

After a King's three, Davy found classmate Edwin Lopez under the hoop for the reverse layup to put FDU back up four. A deep Monarch trey trimmed the lead to one, but Smith hit from the foul line, giving the visitors a two-point lead. King's took a final timeout, but a three-point attempt at the buzzer did not go.

Davy and Dixon each notched 21 points, while Smith had 17. Olaniyi hauled in 12 rebounds, while Dixon also had eight boards. Lopez chipped in 11 off the bench, while Lassiter had six points and five rebounds.
