MADISON, N.J. (December 29, 2018) - The FDU-Florham women's basketball team was topped by Johns Hopkins University 69-62, Saturday afternoon.
The Devils started the game on a 3-0 run to give them the early lead but with a 6-2 Blue Jays run the Devils found themselves behind with 5:35 remaining in the first quarter. FDU would reclaim the lead after a layup by senior
Raven Dowling made it 7-6. The teams continued to trade the lead for the remainder of the quarter until two free throws by senior
Kayla Croswell tied the score at 15 with 11 seconds left in the quarter.
Early in the second quarter Johns Hopkins pushed the lead to 21-17 before a jumper from junior
Jennah Roman made it 21-19. After a Blue Jays free throw, sophomore
Madisyn Rosato tied the game with a corner three after receiving a perfect dish from Dowling.
Over the next five minutes, Johns Hopkins would go on a 15-0 run to push the score to 37-22 with 2:39 left in the quarter. The Devils cut the deficit to 13 at the half when Roman converted on a layup and drew the foul, completing the three point play with 23 seconds left in the half. Roman's eight points at the half led the Devils.
After trading baskets to begin the second half, a 4-0 run by the Devils cut the Johns Hopkins lead to single digits at 44-35. A Blue Jays three pushed the lead back to 12 but back-to-back baskets by junior
Cayla Staggers made it a 47-39 game. Johns Hopkins responded with a 6-0 spurt to push it to 53-39 with 3:19 remaining in the third quarter.
Roman's three a few possessions later made it an 11-point game at 53-42, as the teams would trade baskets to close out the third quarter with Johns Hopkins leading by nine.
The Blue Jays began the final stanza on a 5-0 run, but the Devils responded on a 10-1 run of their own fueled by six points by Roman and four from Croswell. The Devils run made it a 63-56 game with 3:26 left in regulation. However, this is as close as the Devils would come on the comeback attempt as both teams traded a 6-0 rallies down the stretch starting with six straight Blue Jays points.
