MOVING ON! Field Hockey Advances to NCAA Tournament Second Round

MADISON, N.J. (November 7, 2018) - The FDU-Florham field hockey team defeated Susquehanna University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.

The victory for the Devils was head coach Jenn Noon's 118th win, which breaks the tie with former coach Hallie Cohen for most in program history. This was also the third NCAA Tournament victory in program history. FDU had previously notched tournament wins in 1986 and 2014.

Senior Brooke Sherwin netted her ninth goal on the season and senior Samantha Rubin made three saves in goal for the Devils in the winning effort. This was the Devils seventh 1-0 victory of the season and the 12th shutout of the year.

The Devils controlled the pace for the majority of the first half. They held a 7-1 shot advantage and a 6-4 advantage with penalty corners. FDU-Florham's closest opportunity of scoring came in the 32nd minute. Off of a penalty corner, senior Makayla Pak took a shot from nine yards out which was deflected by a River Hawk defender which eventually bounced off the post.

The River Hawks came out strong in the second half including being award five corners within the first ten minutes of the house. However, the first penalty corner for the Devils resulted in the tie-breaking goal. Junior Jessica Pietracatella found Sherwin across the cage for the quick one-timer to give the Devils the lead in the 47th minute.

With under 10 minutes remaining in the game, the River Hawks found themselves on a breakway, but junior Marie Pietracatella was able to catch up to the breakaway River Hawk and deny her a shot on goal. Rubin made two great plays within the final two minutes of regulation to secure the victory for the Devils.

The Devils will travel to Grantham, Pa. to face No. 9 John Hopkins in the second round of the tournament on Saturday November 10, at 2 p.m.
