OWINGS MILL, Md. (November 17, 2018) - The FDU-Florham men's basketball team fell 75-72 to Stevenson in the Buffalo Wild Wings Championship Game Saturday afternoon.
The Devils drop to 2-3 on the season, while Stevenson moves to 2-1.
The first half was highly contested, with neither side able to lead by more than four early. With the host Mustangs up 16-12, FDU went on a 6-0 spurt, capped off with a layup from senior
Anthony Mitchell. Sophomore
Ahmad St. Fleur hit a layup in the paint with 4:17 remaining in the opening stanza, giving FDU their biggest lead of the first half at 33-30. Stevenson countered with a 7-0 run, however junior
Andy Fleurantin knocked down a trey with just 30 seconds left to cut the lead down to one entering the second half.
FDU shot 45.7% from the field in the first 20 minutes, with Fleurantin leading the charge with 10 points.
Junior
Rajaan Dixon connected from deep to level the score at 41 2:41 into the second, but Stevenson hit four straight free throws to regain the lead. The Mustangs used another 7-0 rally to pull in front for the remainder of the game with 7:13 left. Fleurantin brought the score down to two with a pair from the charity stripe but five straight points extended the lead back to eight.
Senior
Tyler Christie and sophomore
Oliver Ortman scored on consecutive possessions to bring the game back to two points with just 40 seconds left on the clock. Stevenson missed their next attempt, but an offensive rebound and free throw made the score three points with five ticks left. Sophomore
Shawn Smith hit one from the free throw line, but his miss on the second was unable to be grabbed by the Devils. Stevenson hit one additional free throw to end the contest.
Smith and Fleurantin each scored 12, while Ortman and Dixon pumped in 11 each off the bench. FDU got five rebounds each from Smith, Fleurantin and Christie.
FDU is back in action Tuesday, hosting Stevens inside the Ferguson Recreation Center at 6 p.m.
