Field Hockey Sets Single Season Shutout Record in 1-0 Win

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (October 19, 2018) - The last time the FDU-Florham field hockey team went to Wilkes-Barre, Pa, junior Jessica Pietracatella scored the overtime winner. Tonight, it was sister Marie's turn, as she scored 6:09 into the first overtime to give FDU a 1-0 win over King's Friday.

With the 1-0 win, the Devils established a new school-record with nine shutouts on the season, surpassing the previous best of eight set during the 2006 campaign. FDU improved to 14-3 overall, and 6-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom. King's drops to 8-10, 3-3 within the conference.

FDU controlled the game from the opening whistle, firing 17 first half shots and taking all 10 penalty corners. The Devils had their best opportunity of the half in the 19th minute, as senior Alyssa Mele rifled a shot on goal. The ball was cleared just before crossing the goal line by Monarch defender Natalie Muscatell.

Muscatell made her second defensive save of the opening half in the 31st minute, this time stopping a shot from Jessica Pietracatella. With time winding down in the stanza, the Devils were awarded a penalty corner. Off the set piece, senior Makayla Pak fired a shot that pinged off the post, and the two sides went into the half scoreless.

The Devils would notch seven second stanza shots, but none were able to find the back of the cage. With just over two minute left in regulation, the Monarchs finally were able to register a shot on goal. Kelsey Gabriele's attempt was flicked away by senior Samantha Rubin, sending the game into overtime.

FDU was awarded five penalty corners in the extra period and it was the fifth one that proved to be the final answer the Devils needed. Off the insert, Pak took a rip that kicked away by the Monarch goalie. Marie Pietracatella found the rebound, and reverse chipped a low shot that just got past the keeper far post, giving the Devils the win.

The Devils held a commanding 33-1 edge in shots, including 19 on goal. Pak led the way with seven, while junior Maggie Sohns and Jessice Pietracatella each took six.

FDU closes out the home portion of their regular season on Wednesday, hosting Manhattanville at 7 p.m. Prior to the game, the Devils will honor seniors Brooke Sherwin, Sarah Parks, Chrissy Penney, Cassidy Santorelli, Kelly O'Neill, Stephanie Noll, Makayla Pak, Alyssa Mele and Samantha Rubin.
