DALLAS, PA. (January 6, 2018) - Sophomore
Gabrielle Harris notched a double-double to lead the FDU women's basketball team to its fifth straight win thanks to a 66-63 triumph over Misericordia Saturday.
The Devils moved to 9-4 and 2-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference, while the host Cougars dropped to 6-5, 0-1 in the MAC Freedom.
"Really proud of the way we toughed it out against a really good team today," said head coach
Marc Mitchell.
FDU quickly fell behind 4-2, but used an 11-2 spurt capped off with a Harris trey to build a seven points lead. The teams traded layups late in the first quarter before Harris buried another three with four on the clock, giving FDU an eight point edge after one.
The lead swelled to double-digits midway through the second stanza, a 6-0 Cougar rally cut the lead in half down to six at 46-40. FDU would convert a quartet from free throws in the final minute, including a pair from junior
Mariah Martinez to head into the fourth quarter up 10.
The hosts stormed out of the gate opening the fourth, using an 11-4 spurt to cut the deficit down to just one possession. After a layup with 6:08 left made the score 55-53, junior
Kayla Croswell hit her only shot of the day, a layup to push the Devils edge to four.
The South River, N.J. native Harris would score the Devils next seven points, including a layup with 1:15 left, stretching the lead to five. After the gap went to one, junior
Raven Dowling hit two key free throws with just under a second left making the score 66-63.
The Cougars called a timeout and advanced the ball to set up one final shot. Misericordia had a look to force the overtime, but the shot missed and the Devils escaped with the three points win.
Harris had 30 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, while sophomore
Kendrea Williams added 13 points and three takeaways. Dowling notched eight steals, as the team forced 31 turnovers.
FDU welcomes King's to campus Wednesday for an 8 p.m. tilt against the Monarchs beginning at 8 p.m.
