Women's Basketball Wins Conference Opener, 90-59

MADISON, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham women's basketball team put on a stunning performance in their Middle Atlantic Freedom Conference Opener, defeating Wilkes University, 90-59, in the Ferguson Recreation Center.

The Devils move to 8-4 on the season as the Colonels drop to 3-7.

FDU received solid contributions all around as Kendrea Williams, who was named USBWA Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 17, scored a game-high 26 points, including five three-pointers in just 24 minutes of play while teammate Gabrielle Harris recorded 23 points of her own.

Juniors Bria Smith and Kayla Croswell dominated the court, each notching a double-double in the victory. Smith grabbed a season-high 10 offensive rebounds to total 15 rebounds, paired with 11 points and Croswell earned 12 points alongside 11 rebounds.

The Devils jumped out of the gate fast and a layup from Cayla Staggers spurred a 15-0 run bridging the first and second quarter as the Devils left the half with a 42-22 lead that the Colonels would never recover from.

Senior Michaela Piserchia was a leader on the court, showcasing a tremendous work ethic with five offensive rebounds and sophomore Jennah Roman was a defensive stalwart, drawing three charges on the defensive end while dishing out four assists.

At guard, junior Raven Dowling made a few key plays as she grabbed four steals in the first half alone, and contributed a game-high eight assists overall.

The Colonels Emily Sofranko led the visiting team with 15 points, going 3-for-3 from behind-the-arc.

In the final seconds it was sophomore Imani Collins who had the final say, scoring her first points of the season with a layup off an assist from Roman.

Up next, the Devils return to conference play when they take on Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa. on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 1 p.m.
