Volleyball Topples Mount St. Vincent and Lehman

RIVERDALE, N.Y. (September 30, 2017) - The FDU women's volleyball team earned its 10th straight victory after knocking off Mount St Vincent and Lehman Saturday.

The Devils improve to 14-3, and the win over Mount St. Vincent in the first match was their fifth straight, five set match victory.

FDU-Florham 3, Mount St. Vincent 2 (25-23, 19-25, 25-16, 19-25, 15-7)
FDU fell behind 12-6 in the first, before battling back behind the serve of senior Courtney Conte. Conte served up four straight aces to tie the frame. With the set tied at 23, juniors Marissa Lehnert and Katie Quinlan each recorded kills to put the Devils up 1-0. The Dolphins the match had, holding FDU to a .057 hitting percentage in the period.

The  third set was tied at six all before sophomore Nathalia Padron reeled off five straight points. After Mount St. Vincent earned two points, Quinlan knocked home back-to-back kills and junior Lauren Harris fired up three aces on four serves. The Dolphins closed to within 24-16, but a ball-handling error put FDU back on top 2-1. FDU fell in the fourth set thanks to six attacking errors, which would bring up a fifth and deciding set,

The Devils, despite getting out-killed 6-5, held the hosts to a -.037 hitting clip, taking advantage of seven attack errors. Four of them came in succession to help FDU construct a 5-0 lead. Freshman Rebecca Morse chipped in an ace during the period, and the clinching point came on a Dolphin service error.

Conte handed out 38 assists to go along with four aces, while senior Melissa Gaffney, Quinlan and Lehnert all 10 kills. The Devils tallied 19 aces as a unit, led by five from Harris.

FDU-Florham 3, Lehman 0 (25-11, 25-6, 25-11)
After a Devils attack made the score 15-10 in favor of FDU, Gaffney and junior Nicole Altman scored the next eight points. Altman recorded an ace, while freshman Liz Moise and Christina Massa each had kills during the run. FDU closed out the set with a Lightning unforced error.

Moise spear-headed a 7-0 spurt on the service line, as Harris put away three straight kills during the rally. Morse ended the frame on a 12-0 run, serving four aces while at the line. The third set started out with Conte tallying 15 straight points serving, including two aces. The rookie Morse ended the match as she received an assist from Conte, helping complete the sweep.

Massa had a career-best six kills, while Conte had seven aces and 28 assists. Harris totaled 11 kills and seven digs, while Gaffney had two rejections along with six kills.

The Devils welcome Delaware Valley for a 7 p.m. MAC Freedom showdown on Tuesday inside the Ferguson Recreation Center.
