MAHWAH, N.J. (September 3, 2017) - Freshman
Erica Martins scored in the 28th minute to lead the FDU women's soccer past Ramapo 1-0 on Sunday.
The Devils move to 2-0 on the short season, while Ramapo is 1-1.
FDU put the first attempt of the game high, but that was the only attempt in the opening 14 minutes of the game. Ramapo had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock in the 21st minute, but a shot was stopped by freshman Nathalia Gallo who was making her first career start in net.
After entering at the 25:19 mark, freshmen Martins and
Madeline Finnegan made their mark. Finnegan crossed a pass in from the right side and found Martins who knocked the pass in for her first career tally. With just under 10 minutes left in the half, Ramapo's Amber Hermanns rang a shot off the post. The Devils had back-to-back corner kicks in the 40th and 41st minutes, but were unable to capitalize.
The tough Devils defense limited Ramapo to a mere a two shots over the second 45 minutes, including none on goal. The Roadrunners equally were tough, limiting FDU to just six shots and none on target. FDU held a 12-9 edge in shots on the day, while also taking seven corner kicks.
Three Devils had two shots each, while Gallo made two saves in net for her first career victory.
FDU is back in action Tuesday, hosting Kean at 7 p.m.
