Field Hockey Edged by No. 3 TCNJ

EWING, N.J. -- Despite a tremendous defensive performance by the FDU-Florham field hockey team, No. 3 ranked The College of New Jersey edged out a 3-0 win in non-conference play at Lions Stadium Tuesday night.

The Devils fall to 7-3 as the Lions move to 5-2 on the season.

TCNJ out-shot FDU-Florham, 29-7 throughout the contest, however the dominant Devils defense of seniors Gabby Allen and Lauren Brannan, junior Makayla Pak and sophomore Marie Pietracatella held the Lions to just 15 shots on goal. Junior Samantha Rubin stunned in net, making a season-high 10 saves.

While the Lions' Elizabeth Morrison buried a goal just 24 seconds into the game, the FDU-Florham defense continuously blocked shots and Pak and Allen made a defensive save each to hold the No. 3 team in Division III scoreless for a full 61 minutes after the first tally.

The Devils trailed by just one at the half and through the majority of the game as junior midfielder Brooke Sherwin led the offense with three shots and senior Marissa Kowalskie fired two, but could not break through.

It wasn't until the 62nd minute that TCNJ was able to find the net again as Morrison notched an insurance goal. Samantha Reed made it 3-0 off a Morrison assist four minutes later to secure the win.

Up next the Devils return to Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m. when they take on Wilkes University at Robert T. Shields Field.
