CENTER VALLEY, PA. (September 13, 2017) - The FDU volleyball team fell in its Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom opener 25-14, 25-22, 25-14 Wednesday.
The Devils drop to 3-2, 0-1 in the MAC Freedom, while DeSales moves to 7-3, 1-0 in conference.
FDU briefly led in the first set, but a 4-0 spurt by the Bulldogs gave them a lead they did not surrender. The Devils closed to within 15-11 after an attack error, but could get no closer in the opening stanza.
Each side had identical .179 hitting percentages in the second stanza, but the Devils fell behind 8-5 early on. Three straight unforced errors evened the set at eight, but the Bulldogs took advantage of attack errors to grab a lead.
With the unit trailing 23-15,
Lauren Harris rolled off five straight points to lose within 23-20. A Bulldog kill brought up set point, but
Katie Quinlan and
Melissa Gaffney each pounded kills to stave off set point. The effort was not enough, as an unforced error put DeSales up 2-0 in the match.
FDU kept the final stanza close, and a Harris kill brought the period to 12-9. But the hosts managed to limit the Devils to just five more points, taking the third set in a convincing 25-14 fashion.
FDU was unable to put away their attacks, committing only 14 errors on 106 swings, but only notching 29 kills in the match. Gaffney had nine kills and 10 digs, while
Rachel Catena led the way with 12 digs.
