Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Crusaders

MADISON, N.J. (April 9, 2017) -- The FDU-Florham women's lacrosse team rolled to a 15-3 victory over Alvernia University on Sunday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.

The Devils improve to 9-3 as the Crusaders dropped to 6-5.

Senior Frances Maggio led the way with three goals and two assists.

Sophomores Caitlyn Damon, Kathleen Petrucelli, senior Joelle Manganella and junior Samantha Holleritter added two goals each as senior Brienna Reasoner, freshman Madison Wood, junior Cassidy Vastano and sophomore Mackenzie Staffordsmith notched a goal apiece.

It took the Devils just four minutes to score as Manganella fired in a goal on just the second shot of the contest.

Just over a minute later it was Maggio who tallied a beautiful goal off a feed from Petrucelli.

With 18:49 remaining in the first half senior Noelle Shirey caused a turnover and Damon picked up the ground ball to give the Devils possession. Maggio got hold of the ball and sprinted through the defense to snipe in the fourth goal of the game.

The Crusaders added one at the stick of Abby McCarthy but FDU-Florham added four more before the half as sophomore goalie Megan Nemeth made a tough kick save to keep the Devils up, 8-2.

FDU-Florham continued to dominate in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals from Petrucelli, Manganella, Holleritter and Maggio.

With 17:50 remaining on the clock, Nemeth came up with a big save, stopping a free position shot by McCarthy.

Castano and sophomore Jessica Haddad each picked up four ground balls in the victory as senior Laura Cannillo grabbed three. Reasoner finished the day with two ground balls, four caused turnovers and five draw controls and Shirey recorded two assists.

Nemeth made seven stops to earn the win.

Up next, the Devils travel to St. Davis, Pa. to take on Eastern University in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom matchup.
