CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (April 2, 2017) - Behind the bat of junior
Taylor Torre, the FDU softball team picked up a sweep of DeSales in MAC Freedom action Sunday.
GAME 1: FDU 7, DeSales 4
After a scoreless two frames, the Bulldogs staged a two-out rally, plating two runs home. The Devils tied the game in the next half inning as Torre singled to lead-off and junior
Michelle Mangini homered to left to make everything even at two.
Junior
Audrie Thomas kept DeSales off the board in the fourth, and Torre hit a two-run homer to left in the fifth putting FDU on top. With the bases loaded in the sixth, freshman
Annamarie Santangelo broke the game open, delivering a clutch two-run single.
With Thomas running into trouble in the sixth, freshman
Megan Zaccario entered and allowed two inherited runners to score putting the tying run on deck. Zaccario got a huge strikeout to end the sixth and sent DeSales down 1-2-3 in the seventh for her first career save.
Torre finished a double shy of the cycle, while sophomore
Courtney Rohde, junior
Rebecca DeCarlo and Mangini each had two hits. Thomas fanned two in 5 1/3 innings of work, while Zaccario struck out a pair.
GAME 2: FDU 7, DeSales 6
In a wild nightcap, Torre knocked in the first run in the first at bat with an RBI groundout. Zaccario allowed three baserunners over the course of the first three frames, and DeCarlo doubled the Devils lead with an RBI double in the top of the fourth.
Despite the Bulldogs getting one hit in the home fourth, they were able to take advantage of an error to even the score. Freshman
Gabby Young led off the fifth with a single, and an errant throw by the shortstop sent the speedster into second. Torre knocked in another runner with a single and four batters later loaded the bases. DeSales escaped further damage with an inning strike out.
The Devils took advantage of another DSU miscue in the sixth, as Young drove in classmate
Tara Morash, who reached on an error. Morash collected an RBI single in the seventh giving FDU a three edge heading into the bottom of the final inning.
The leadoff hitter singled, and the next batter belted a home run to right to cut the Devils lead to one. Zaccario got a pair of outs with a walk in between, but an additional walk and stolen base had runners on second and third. A single up the middle tied the game, but Zaccario rebounded with a huge strikeout to force extra innings.
The teams each scored in the eighth, forcing another frame. Torre, who drove in the Devils run in the eighth, came up with one out and bases loaded in the ninth. With no place to put the Devils hottest hitter, Torre ripped a single to center to give FDU a lead for good. Freshman Kaylee Fish worked a perfect ninth inning for her first career win.
Torre and Young each had four hits apiece, while Morash touched home twice. Zaccario punched out a career-best seven in the no-decision.
