PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 12, 2017) - The FDU baseball team picked up a pair of much needed MAC Freedom Conference wins against Manhattanville Wednesday.
The Devils are now 4-6 in conference, and 10-10 overall. The Valiants sit at 10-14 overall, and 5-5 in conference.
GAME 1: FDU 3, Manhattanville 2
The Valiants scored the first run of the game on an RBI single in the bottom of the second, but neither side was able to break through until the fifth. Junior
Christopher Franco led off the fifth with a double, and moved to third on a groundout. Senior
Dylan DiPolvere hit a fly ball that was deep enough to score Franco and the game was tied.
M-Ville wasted no time retaking the lead, taking advantage of an error to add an unearned run in the home half of the inning. The Devils went ahead for good in the sixth, as junior
Garrett Ruoff knocked in
David Wilbur, who led off with a single. Ruoff would score on an error to put FDU in front 3-2. The Valiants had runners on second in both of the final two frames, but could not push across the tying run.
Kenny Carrier earned the win, tossing a complete game allowing just two runs and one strikeout.
GAME 2: FDU 11, Manhattanville 7
The teams combined for six runs in the second, as FDU was able to go ahead 4-2. The big knocks for FDU were singles by junior
Reynaldo Diaz and senior
Bryan Pieschel. The Valiants cut the gap in half with a sac fly and an unearned run in the bottom half of the frame.
The Valiants exploded for four runs on four hits, as eight of the first nine batters in the bottom of the third reached base. The Devils had an offensive boom of their own in the top of the sixth, loading the bases thanks to three walks. Diaz tied the game with a single though the left side, and Franco hit into a fielder's choice putting the Devils on top for good.
Senior
Josh DellaPietro and junior
Ben Thompson each worked bases walks to score runs, and the game was blown open on a two-out single by junior
Joseph Bonaccorso. The Valiants would add a meaningless run in the bottom of the seventh to conclude the scoring.
Junior
Matt Zingaro worked five innings out of the bullpen, striking out six and allowing just four hits and one run. Diaz and Bonaccorso each had two hits and two runs scored.
