Softball Topples Drew 8-6

MADISON, N.J. (April 12, 2017) - The FDU softball team pounded out 12 hits en route to an 8-6 win over Drew on Wednesday.

The Rangers are now 4-15 while FDU improved to 9-16.

The teams traded runs in the first inning, with junior Rebecca DeCarlo singling up the middle to plate freshman Annamarie Santangelo. Drew would score twice more in the second and once in the third to build a 4-1 lead after the top of the third, but freshman Kaylee Fish bore down and stifled the Rangers over the next three frames.

The Devils tied the game in the home third, as junior Taylor Torre hit her third home run of the season, this time a solorun shot. With DeCarlo on first, senior Paige Lillie doubled her home and freshman Liz Kelly followed with run-scoring single. FDU grabbed the lead for good in the fourth as junior Michelle Mangini hit the first of her two sacrifice flies to put the team on top 5-4. Torre would scoot home on a wild pitch, and Lillie singled home DeCarlo to end the three-run frame.

After the second Mangini sac fly, Drew threatened to tie the game in the seventh and final inning. Freshman Megan Zaccario relieved Fish with the bases loaded and one out, and retired two of the next three batters just as the Rangers had clawed back to within a pair of runs. Zaccario got the final out on a strikeout to end the game.

Torre went 3-for-4, while freshman Gabby Young went 2-for-4. Sophomore Rhianna Paoletti collected her first hit of the season as she made her first start at catcher. Zaccario nailed down her second save of the season, while Fish picked up her second win of the campaign.
