JERSEY CITY, N.J. (April 11, 2017) - Despite collecting 16 hits and 15 runs, the FDU baseball team fell to in-state rival NJCU 19-15 Tuesday.
The Devils fall to 8-10, while NJCU drops to 8-11.
FDU chased NJCU starter Franklin Herrera after just 2/3 of an inning, tagging the righty for five runs on three hits.
Bryan Pieschel, and
Garrett Ruoff had RBI singles while
Kevin Smiegocki had a two-run ground-rule double all in the first inning. The Gothic Knights answered back with three in the first and one in the second to trim the gap to one.
With the bases loaded in the third, senior Nick DeAngelis Jr. singled home two runs, while junior
Reynaldo Diaz and Pieschel also collected RBI hits. Trailing 9-4, NJCU had 10 straight batters reach base in the third inning, scoring nine times on nine hits. The Devils decided they weren't done, scoring five times in the top of the fourth, the big hit a two-run single to left from junior
Christopher Franco.
NJCU took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from Daniel Berardi, one of three doubles he had on the afternoon. An unearned in the sixth, and three runs in the eighth capped off the scoring on a wild afternoon.
Sophomore
Joseph DeFeo made his pitching debut, striking out eight over four innings of relief. In his first start, Weber went 2-for-5 with two RBI's. The Devils one through six hitters all had two hits, while every starter had at least one hit and eight of nine had RBI's.
