Softball Drops Two With Stevens

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (March 8, 2017) – The FDU softball dropped a pair of road games against the Stevens Institute of Technology Wednesday.

The Devils drop to 1-3 in the early season, while Stevens won in its season-opener.

GAME 1: Stevens 4, FDU 0
The Ducks got on the board in their first at bat, as their clean-up hitter delivered an RBI triple to right center. Freshman pitcher Megan Zaccario settled down, allowing just two more runners to reach base over the next three innings. FDU threatened in both the first and second innings, but were unable to push a run across.

Stevens tacked another run on in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but FDU sent the tying run to the plate in the sixth with two outs, but could not get a run through. Senior Amanda DiLeo broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth for the hosts, delivering a two-run single to center to make the score 4-0. Junior Audrie Thomas entered in relief and escaped a bases-loaded no out jam by not allowing another run to score.

Junior Michelle Mangini ripped a double, while classmates Marlena Bevilacqua and Rebecca DeCarlo also added hits for the Devils.

GAME 2 Stevens 8, FDU 2
Stevens scored single runs in the first, second and third, but the Devils got one back in the second on a solo home run by Mangini. Mangini was the catalyst for FDU, as she drove another run in during the top of the fourth, cutting the Ducks lead to a single run.

The hosts put up two runs in the fourth (one unearned) and finally ended the scoring with three runs in the sixth, as game one starting pitcher Olivia Gemma hit a two-run homer to left center.

Mangini had two of the team's four hits, while Bevilacqua swiped a pair of bases. Thomas went the distance, striking out one.

FDU will be back in action on Sunday, taking on Keene State and Framingham State in Clermont, Fla.
