CLERMONT, Fla. (March 12, 2017) – The FDU softball team topped Keene State before falling to Framingham State in Florida Saturday.
GAME 1: FDU 9, Keene State 5
After giving up a run in the top of the first, FDU responded back with authority in their first at bat in Florida, scoring five runs on three hits. The big hit of the inning was a single by junior
Rebecca DeCarlo that plated two runs. The Devils were patient at the plate, working four walks in the first inning.
Freshman
Megan Zaccario escaped a second and third one out in the top of the second, and the Devils padded their lead with four more tallies. DeCarlo drew a bases loaded walk, and freshman Annemarie Santangelo delivered her first career hit with a two-run single to left center. The Owls took advantage of a pair of Devils errors in the fourth to score two runs, and a leadoff triple in the sixth added one more.
Keene State rallied in the top of the seventh, as the leadoff batter reached on a fluke double that caromed off the second base bag and rolled into left. A stolen base and an error brought that runner home, but a double play ended the comeback hope.
Junior
Taylor Torre had two hits, while classmate
Michelle Mangini and Torre each scored a pair of runs. Zaccario went the distance, striking out two while allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits.
GAME 2: Framingham State 10, FDU 2
Framingham began the scoring in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs. The inning ended after a Rams runner was gunned out by centerfielder
Marlena Bevilacqua trying to stretch a single into a double. The Rams added a run in the second on a home run to center by Lauren Salisbury and two more in the third on four straight hits.
FDU loaded the bases in the fourth with one out, but were unable to score as Framingham recorded a pair of strikeouts to exit the jam. The Devils entered the scoring column in game two with an RBI double from junior
Taylor Torre, and a walk a batter loaded the bases once again. Sophomore Courtney Rhode worked a walk after fouling off several pitches, but FDU was unable to do any more damage.
The Rams completed the scoring with four runs in the seventh, including a pair of unearned runs.
During the doubleheader, Bevilacqua swiped three bases.
FDU will play two games tomorrow, beginning at 8 a.m. against Messiah.
