BRONX, N.Y. (March 5, 2017) - The FDU softball team split a doubleheader with NYU in the season-opening series Sunday.
GAME 1: NYU 20, FDU 4
NYU had second and third with two outs in the first, but junior
Audrie Thomas fielded a comebacker and fired to first to end the frame. The Devils threatened in the top of the second, as senior
Paige Lillie and freshman
Liz Kelly reached an error and a walk respectively. But NYU starter Karissa Zubulake recorded a strikeout to end the threat.NYU struck for a pair of unearned runs in the home half of the second, with both coming around on an error. NYU would score nine runs in each of the next two innings.
The Devils got on the board in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs. Senior
Jacquelyn Tartaglia led off with a single and the Devils loaded the bases courtesy of a walk and error. Junior
Marlena Bevilacqua scored Tartaglia on an error and then junior
Taylor Torre ripped a single to left that plated another run. The final run came across on an RBI fielder's choice by junior
Michelle Mangini.
Freshman
Kaylee Fish made her debut in relief, tossing an inning allowing three earned runs. Freshman
Tara Morash reached base twice in her collegiate debut.
For NYU, Damiani and Webber combined for nine runs batted in, while Zubulake surrendered four runs on three hits in five innings.
GAME 2: FDU 11, NYU 9
Freshman
Megan Zaccario started the nightcap for FDU, and limited the Violets to just two runs over the first two innings. Zaccario surrendered a run in the third on a single to right, but Tartaglia came up firing to nail a runner at third to end the inning.
With no one out in the fourth, a Torre infield hit and a walk to senior
Paige Lillie, coupled with a wild pitch brought up Mangini. Mangini blooped a to right to score Torre, and the next batter, junior
Rebecca DeCarlo singled under the glove of the third basemen to cut the gap to 3-2. However NYU pitcher Diana King retired the next three hitters to squelch the rally.
The Devils loaded the bases up in the top of the fith with no one out and chased King. FDU took advantage of several miscues, scoring eight runs in the top of the fifth. Freshman
Gabby Young recorded her first career RBI with a sacrifice fly, as the Devils used three Violet errors in the inning.
The Violets loaded the bases in the home fifth inning, and the seventh-hitter Claire Stefanelli belted a grand-slam to left field, clearing the bases. NYU added an unearned run also in the fifth to trail 10-8 heading into the sixth. FDU put a run on the board in the sixth as Mangini touched home after Kelly drew a throw on a dropped third strike. NYU added a run in the sixth, but could not get any closer than two runs.
Zaccario hurled a complete game in her first collegiate appearance, striking out six. Torre collected three hits, while Mangini, Young, and DeCarlo each had a pair of singles.
FDU will be back in action on Wednesday, taking on Stevens on the road with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
