Seven Run First Inning Propels Baseball Past Rutgers Camden

MADISON, N.J. (March 30, 2017) - The FDU baseball team scored seven times in the first inning en route to a 10-5 victory over Rutgers-Camden Thursday.

The Devils even their mark at 5-5, while Camden dropped to 8-7.

Junior Garrett Ruoff led off in the bottom of first by smacking a first pitch triple to right center. After senior Nick DeAngelis Jr. singled to knock in Ruoff, junior Reynaldo Diaz singled to center, and the runners moved up a base on a balk. Junior Christopher Franco singled back through the box to score both, and the next two hitters reached on errors by the Scarlet Raptors. Junior Joseph Bonaccorso doubled to left and Ruoff singled; his second hit of the frame, to score the final two runs.

Staked to a 7-0 lead, the Devils senior starter John Armstrong worked two innings in a pre-determined pitching rotation to earn the win. Freshman Steven Riley and junior Walter Pennett each fanned two during their appearance today.

Camden got to within 7-3 before the Devils scored three unearned runs; two in the fourth and one in the sixth. Chris Jones had a two-run double for Camden in the top of the eighth to complete the scoring on the day before the game was called in the eighth inning due to darkness.

Ruoff was a home-run shy of the cycle, finishing 3-for-5 with an RBI. Franco knocked in a pair of runs, as the top four hitters in the Devils lineup combined to go 9-for-18 on the day with six RBI's.

FDU will travel to DeSales on Saturday for one game, before returning home Sunday to play the Bulldogs in a doubleheader.
