Women's Lacrosse Wins Madison Ave. Showdown

MADISON, N.J. (March 22, 2017) - Seniors Frances Maggio and Noelle Shirey each scored three times to lead the FDU women's lacrosse team to a 12-8 win over Drew in the Battle of Madison Ave. Wednesday.

FDU improves to 4-1 on the year, as Drew falls to 5-3 overall.

It didn't take long for FDU to get on board, as Maggio scored on a free position shot just 30 seconds into the contest. A pair of seniors hooked up for the second goal, as Laura Cannillo fed Shirey nearly three minutes later to double the lead. The teams traded free position goals, as senior Brienna Reasoner added one for FDU and Maggio potted her second of the afternoon with 12:09 left.

After junior Samantha Holleritter scored with nine minutes left in the opening stanza, neither side was able to find the back of the net until Maggio scored a rare man down goal giving FDU a 6-3 halftime lead. The Devils were nearly perfect on clears in the opening 30 minutes, going 6-for-7 while scooping up 15 first half ground balls.

Drew began the scoring the in the second frame, but seniors Shirey and Joelle Manganella scored 46 seconds apart to reconstruct the four goal lead. The Devils spaced their scoring apart, recording four additional free position goals over the final 19:36. The hosts scored a pair of late goals cutting the difference to four, but that was as close as they would get.

FDU went 8-for-12 on free position attempts, and held the edge in shots (29-20), ground balls (20-17), and draw controls (15-7). Senior Brittni Calleo had four draw controls, while sophomore Caroline Pape led a host of Devils with three ground balls.

The Devils finish up their season-opening six game road trip with a Friday afternoon matchup against Vassar.
