CLERMONT, Fla. (March 16, 2017) – The FDU baseball team split a doubleheader against Farmingdale State on Wednesday.
The Devils went 2-6 in Florida, and are 3-9 overall.
GAME 1: Fredonia 9, FDU 7
Fredonia scored a run in the top of the first, but FDU responded with a pair of their own in the bottom half. Walks to freshman
Annamarie Santangelo and senior
Paige Lillie coupled with a single by freshman
Gabby Young brought up junior
Taylor Torre. Torre delivered a sacrifice fly to center, and two batters later sophomore Courtney Rhode singled to left to knock in Torre.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, the Blue Devils eighth hitter hit a long solo homer to left to even the game at two. After Rhode worked a walk in the bottom of the frame, junior
Rebecca DeCarlo belted a two-run home run to left for her first home run of the season.
The Devils doubled their lead the very next inning, plating two runs. Torre hit a one-out single, the next hitter, junior
Michelle Mangini, bashed her team-leading third home run of the season to dead center field.
Fredonia cut into the lead in the sixth, as a line-drive, two-run home run and an RBI single to trim the gap to one. Junior
Audrie Thomas entered in relief, retiring the final two hitters on strikeouts. Fredonia tied the game and took the lead in the top of the seventh, the big hit being a two-run triple down the right field line.
The Devils threatened to tie in the bottom of the seventh. Torre doubled to lead off the inning, and came home on an infield single by DeCarlo. With the tying run at the plate, the Fredonia pitcher got a strikeout to end the game.
Rhode, Torre and DeCarlo all recorded two hits and combined for five RBI's in the setback.
GAME 2: Fitchburg 7, FDU 4
Fitchburg drew first blood, scoring two runs on a home run in the top half of first inning. After the next two and a half innings went by scoreless, the Devils grabbed a 3-2 lead with three in the top of fourth. Freshmen
Annamarie Santangelo and
Gabby Young led off with singles and Lillie knocked in a run with a hit to center. Mangini came up and singled in both Young and pinch runner
Rhianna Paoletti to give FDU the lead.
With one down in the sixth, Fitchburg regained the lead, as a throwing error put runners on second and third. The following batter doubled over the centerfielders head to score both runners. Fitchburg would tally three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. Santangelo delivered an RBI double in the seventh but the Devils could not get any closer.
???????Santangelo and Young each had two hits for FDU, while Thomas struck out three in 5 2/3 innings.
