AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 15, 2017) – The FDU baseball team split a doubleheader against Farmingdale State on Wednesday.
GAME 1: Farmingdale St. 6, FDU 3
First basemen
Christopher Franco knocked home the opening run of the game with an RBI single in the top of the first, but FDU could do no more damage as they left four runners on base over the opening two innings. The Rams came back to take a 3-1 lead after four, but FDU was able to tie it in the home fourth inning.
In the Devils fourth, the team loaded the bases with one out. Leadoff hitter
Garrett Ruoff singled in a run, and
Reynaldo Diaz drew a walk to even the score at three. FDU was unable to score the rest of the game, as Farmingdale scored three times in the sixth, including back-to-back home runs to open the frame.
Nick DeAngelis Jr. had two hits, while
Brad Norris tossed five innings with a pair of strikeouts and only walked one.
GAME 2: FDU 8, Farmingdale St. 4
Once again FDU started early, scoring two runs in the first. Diaz lofted a sac fly to left, while
Ben Thompson singled home an additional run. After the Rams tied the score in their first at bat, the Devils bats came alive in the second, adding four runs with two outs.
A one-out single by
Joseph Bonaccorso and a two-out double by Ruoff had runners in scoring position, and DeAngelis was able to break the game open. He stroked a double that plated both runners, and would come around on a Diaz single. Diaz came around to touch the plate on an error by the Farmingdale catcher.
Staked to a big lead, freshman
Anthony Cuomo allowed three runs in five innings, fanning four.
Joseph Breymeier and
Josh DellaPietro each added RBI's over the final two innings to extend the lead.
Matt Zingaro tossed the final two frames, allowing just one run.
FDU will conclude its spring break trip with a single game against Stockton on Thursday.
