DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (February 11, 2017) – The FDU women's basketball team used a 50-point first half to knock off Delaware Valley 91-75 Saturday afternoon.
FDU moves to 20-3, 11-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom, while Delaware Valley dropped to 9-13, 5-6 in the MAC Freedom.
The Aggies opened the contest with a 7-0 run, forcing Coach
Jessica Cavaco into taking a 30 second timeout. The Devils responded with a bang off the rest, as the team went on a 20-1 run spurt, with freshman
Kendrea Williams scoring 11 points during the rally.
During a six-minute stretch in the opening frame, Delaware Valley went cold, converting just one field goal and scoring just five points after the opening 7-0 run. The Devils shot at a 52.9% clip while holding Del Val to 22.2%.
After scoring 16 points in the first, Williams tacked on nine more in the second, bringing her total to 25 points in the opening half. Seniors
Alyssa McDonough and
Rachel Groom combined for 14 first half tallies and 15 boards.
A 6-0 rally in the third, capped off by a pair of free throws from McDonough gave the Devils one of their biggest leads at 25 points, and the Devils cruised into the fourth with a 21-point lead. A layup by freshman
Cayla Staggers with 8:19 left stretched the FDU to 26 points, but a 9-2 Aggie run trimmed the gap to back under 20 points.
McDonough stopped the run with a layup, but Delaware Valley was once again able to go on a big run, this time running off 13 consecutive points. The Aggies kept the Devils off the board for nearly four minutes, but the guests sealed the win with an 8-0 spurt to conclude the game.
Williams scored a career-high 31 points while Staggers also tallied a career-best 10. Groom and McDonough each recorded double-doubles; Groom totaling 15 points and 13 rebound and McDonough notching 18 points and 11 boards.
Ashley Smink had 21 points for the Aggies, while Danielle Skedzielewski had 14.
The Devils wrap-up their MAC Freedom road slate with a Wednesday game against Manhattanville.
