MADISON, N.J. (January 31, 2017) – The FDU women's basketball team got back to its winning ways with a 71-42 triumph over Wilkes Wednesday evening.
The Devils improve to 17-3, 8-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom while Wilkes fell to 0-9 in the MAC, 5-15 overall.
Defense was the key in the first half for the Devils, forcing 17 Colonel turnovers. Sophomore
Kayla Croswell had five takeaways in the opening 20 minutes to go along with six points, while senior
Alyssa McDonough had four of her own. In fact, McDonough notched a double-double of 14 points and 10 boards in just the first half alone.
The Devils closed the opening stanza with a 19-0 run to go up 18 after one, and then limited Wilkes two field goals in the second quarter, going 6:48 without connecting on one. A layup by sophomore
Mariah Martinez stretched the lead to 32 points with 2:23 left in the third, but Wilkes countered with a 10-3 run to bring the gap back to under 30. FDU closed out the contest with eight of the final 10 markers, with four coming from freshman
Cayla Staggers.
McDonough finished with 20 points, 14 boards, six assists, and five steals, while Martinez added 13 points. Croswell ended the evening with 12 points, seven rebounds, six steals and five assists.
FDU will be back on the road Saturday, taking on DeSales at 1 p.m.
