MADISON, N.J. (November 28, 2017) - The FDU women's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start and fell to Moravian College 68-60 Tuesday evening.
The Greyhounds improved to 4-1 with the win, while FDU dipped to 2-3.
FDU scored the first bucket of the game on a jumper by junior
Raven Dowling, but gave up 10 of the next 13. A pair of free throws from sophomore Cayla Staggers trimmed the deficit to four, but five straight points bridging the first and second periods stretched the lead to nine for the Greyhounds.
The Devils couldn't get into a rhythm in the second stanza, scoring just two points over the first 7:04 before sophomore
Kendrea Williams ended the drought with a layup. Williams hit two from the charity stripe to end the first half as the Devils trailed 25-18. The two sides combined to go 13-of-48 from the field and 27 turnovers over the first 20 minutes of play.
The Greyhound scored the opening three points in the fourth, but a trey from junior
Mariah Martinez knocked the lead down to just five. Moravian grabbed their biggest of the lead of the evening thanks to a 6-0 spurt which opened the gap to 14 points with 5:57 left. Junior
Bria Smith hit a layup with 31 seconds to get within five, but that was as close as FDU would get.
Making her first career start, senior
Michaela Piserchia had nine rebounds and two steals while Williams totaled 14 points. Sophomore
Gabrielle Harris led the team with 19 points and nine rebounds, as Smith notched a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
FDU is back in action on Monday, when they head right down Madison Ave. to take on Drew at 7 p.m.
