MADISON, N.J. (November 12, 2017) - The FDU women's soccer team knocked No. 2 seeded Widener 2-1 in the ECAC Tournament First Round Saturday.
The No. 3 seeded Devils, who moved to 13-6, will take on No. 1 seeded NYU tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Robert T. Shields Field.
The game didn't start off well for the Devils, as just 1:04 in they surrendered an own goal. A defender went to pass the ball back, but keeper
Ashley Paulino was off her line and the ball went into an unmanned net. The Devils evened the game seven minutes later, as freshman
Tatiana Nieto blasted a free kick upper-90 from 27 yards out.
In the 23rd minute, Paulino faced two straight shots but was able to make the first save as the second went wide. The Pride got two lucky bounces in the 43rd minute, as freshmen
Nathalia Gallo and
Madison Rosa clanged shots off the post.
The luck ran out on the Rosa shot, as her rebound bounced right to classmate
Madeline Finnegan, who headed the ball down past a diving keeper to give FDU a 2-1 lead heading into the half.
FDU looked to extend the lead to two in the 80th minute, but a Gallo shot was snared by goalie Sam Thatch. With just under seven minutes left, Widener had a tying attempt go wide after a scramble in front. Paulino made her final save with 48 seconds left, deflecting an Alexa Byers shot wide.
The Devils held a 10-8 edge in shots, and were led by three from senior
Kristina Ragolia. Gallo and Nieto each had a pair, while Paulino made four stops in net.
