Field Hockey Falls in ECAC Final, 2-0

READING, PA. (November 12, 2017) - The FDU field hockey team fell to Alvernia 2-0 in the ECAC Championship game Sunday afternoon.

The Devils and Knights each end their season with identical 15-8 marks. Seniors Gabby Allen, Lauren Brannan, Marissa Kowalskie and Paige Zawislak played in their final games, finishing up careers with a 60-32 record, including one Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Championship and one NCAA Tournament appearance.

Both teams had trouble getting shots off in the first half, as of the combined 10 taken, only two reached goal. The Knights had three straight attempts in the 20th minute, the final one getting saved by a Devils defender while the other two were blocked. In the 21st minute, junior Samantha Rubin came up with a big stop off a penalty corner to preserve the 0-0 score.

The Devils best chance came in the 33rd minute, as junior Makayla Pak had a shot go wide. That would be the last action of the frame, and teams went into halftime scoreless.

Four minutes into the second stanza, Alvernia broke through, as Malorie McCoy dribbled around the goalie and scored to break the deadlock. Nearly nine minutes later, the Knights doubled the lead, as Hailey Knowlton dribbled around Rubin and scored, forcing the Devils to call a timeout.

The timeout helped, as the Devils controlled the rest of the game, limiting Alvernia to just one shot. Sophomore Maggie Sohns had two shots off corners but was unable to find the back of the net.

Sohns and Pak each had two shots, while Rubin made two saves in the setback.
