ST. DAVID'S, Pa. (November 1, 2017) - The FDU volleyball team was knocked off by Eastern 25-11, 25-9, 25-10 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Semifinals Wednesday evening.
The Devils drop to 25-8, while Eastern is 19-12. The Eagles are now 19-12, and will face No. 1 seeded DeSales in the MAC Freedom Championship game.
A kill by senior
Melissa Gaffney cut the set score to 11-8, but Eastern tallied the next six points to extend their lead, forcing FDU into a timeout. The Devils would get no closer than eight, as the hosts closed out with seven of the final eight points.
The Devils hung close in the second set, as junior
Lauren Harris pounded home to trim the deficit to 8-7. The Eagles reeled off the following nine points, stretching the lead to double digits. Eastern finished off the frame with seven consecutive tallies to go up 2-0.
Eastern controlled the third and final frame from the beginning, scoring 11 of the first 13 markers. Despite closing the gap to seven, it was as close as the Devils would get to pulling the upset. Back-to-back Devil attack errors ended the match in a 3-0 favor for Eastern.
Harris had seven kills, while junior
Marissa Lehnert had four. Senior
Rachel Catena had a team-best digs.
