MADISON, N.J. - The FDU volleyball extended its winning streak to a team-record 13 straight games with a sweep of Alvernia and Brooklyn Saturday.
The Devils, who did not drop a set during the two matches, improved to 17-3 on the season.
FDU-Florham 3, Alvernia 0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-22)
The Devils scored the first five points of the first set against the Crusaders, and never trailed by less than four the entire frame. FDU tallied the final four markers, capped off with a service ace from senior
Rachel Catena.
Despite falling behind in the second set, the Devils battled back as junior
Lauren Harris knocked home back-to-back kills, and senior
Melissa Gaffney served up seven straight to build a 17-10 lead. An
Amelia Vetto service ace brought up set point, and a kill by junior
Katie Quinlan put FDU up 2-0.
Freshman
Rebecca Morse had three aces during a 6-0 spurt on the service line to put FDU up 9-3 in the third. The Crusaders battled back and four straight points made the score 21-20 in the favor of the Devils. Alvernia could get no closer, as FDU finished the match off with a Gaffney kill.
The Devils limited Alvernia to a .055 hitting percentage, while they hit .280 on their own. Gaffney led the way with 12 kills, while senior
Courtney Conte handed out 30 assists.
FDU-Florham 3, Brooklyn 0 (25-9, 25-21, 25-14)
The Devils strong hitting carried over to the first set against the Bulldogs, slamming home 16 kills against one error while hitting ,375. Brooklyn was limited to just five kills and four errors, and only hit .028 in the opening stanza.
Despite getting out hit in the second set, the Devils battled back from an early 5-1 deficit to go up 9-6 thanks to kills from
Nathalia Padron, Harris, Quinlan and Gaffney. Brooklyn used consecutive points to get back to within one at 18-17, but could ger no close. The Bulldogs staved off a pair of match points before a Padron kill ended things.
Harris had 10 kills and 18 digs, while
Marissa Lehnert had two blocks and nine kills.
The Devils resume MAC Freedom play against Eastern on Wednesday.
