Freshmen lead Women's Soccer to 5-3 Victory over CSI

Freshman midfielder Nathalia Gallo scored a hat trick to secure the win

MADISON, N.J. -- FDU-Florham women's soccer freshman Nathalia Gallo scored a hat trick to lift the Devils over the College of Staten Island, 5-3, in a non-conference match Tuesday night at Robert T. Shields Field.

Gallo finished the night scoring three of four shots on goal as freshmen Madeline Finnegan and Erica Martins scored one apiece in the triumph, to push the Devils to 7-4 on the season.

The Dolphins came out quick, scoring on the first shot of the game when Nicole Mignone converted on a pass from Daniela Zirpolo 2:45 into the contest.

FDU-Florham answered back just 1:45 later when Finnegan beat her defender and lobbed the ball into the left side of the net off a cross from sophomore Lindsey Scarmozzino.

In the 15th minute, Gallo hit her first goal of the night, firing in a shot from 25 yards out off a feed from freshman Amanda Croce.

CSI found a way to tie things up in the 23rd minute when a defensive lapse allowed Mignone to score one right outside the six.

Still, the Devils continued to work and freshman Tatiana Nieto won the ball in the middle and passed it to Gallo who chipped it over the goalie's head to give FDU-Florham a 3-2 lead at half time.

In the 57th minute it was Martins who tallied the game-winner, knocking one in on a Nieto feed to put the Devils up, 4-2.

The Dolphins refused to quit however and successfully screened freshman goalie Ashley Paulino as CSI's Lauren Smith snuck one in to the bottom right to come within just one of the Devils.

It was Gallo who scored the insurance goal in the 88th minute to complete her hat trick by launching a rocket over the goalie's head off a free kick from 38 yards out.

The Devils finished the night outshooting CSI, 17-14, and Paulino made four stops in the win.

Up next FDU-Florham returns to Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom action when they face Wilkes University on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
