Field Hockey Earns No. 1 Seed in MAC Freedom Tournament For 4th Straight Year

The Devils Defeated Manhattanville, 4-1, to grab the No. 1 seed in the MAC Freedom

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The FDU-Florham field hockey team scored four straight unanswered goals, all off penalty corners, within a span of just seven minutes to earn the 4-1 win over Manhattanville College on Thursday night.

The Devils (13-6, 6-1 MAC Freedom) were relentless all night, outshooting their opponent 25-5 and grabbing a 15-5 advantage on penalty corners to lead them to the No. 1 seed in conference playoffs. FDU has claimed the No. 1 seed in the MAC Freedom Championship the last four seasons.

Junior midfielder Chrissy Penney had a breakout game for the Devils, firing five shots on goal and scoring once, including the game-winning tally.

Despite taking command of the field, FDU-Florham struggled to get one past Valiants goalie Kaitlin Halloran in the first half and Manhattanville finished on their first shot of the night, as Haley Linkroum shot deflected in off of Lisa Maxwelle off a penalty corner, 21:24 into the first.

That was the last time the Valiants would score as senior Marissa Kowalskie tied things up in the 38th minute, knocking in an unassisted tally.

The tides turned and the Devils gained the momentum from there as Penney struck to notch the game-winning mark 59 seconds after Kowalskie tied things to put the Devils up, 2-1.

FDU-Florham continued to capitalize on their penalty corner opportunities as  Kowalskie converted in the 42nd minute off a shot from senior Gabby Allen. Just two minutes later, junior midfielder Brooke Sherwin added another insurance goal off a Kowalskie feed to ensure the triumph.

Junior Makayla Pak was a key player on defense and contributed five shots, including four on goal, in the effort.

The Valiants poured on the pressure in the final 15 minutes of the contest, but freshman Megan March made two pivotal stops to hold off their attack.

Up next, the Devils will face fourth-seeded DeSales in the first round of the MAC Freedom Championships on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at Robert T. Shields at a time to be announced.
