MADISON, N.J. (October 22, 2017) - Freshman
Erica Martins scored in the 17th minute to lead the FDU women's soccer team to a 1-0 upset over No. 18 Misericordia Sunday.
The victory, which was the teams first ever against a ranked opponent, moved the Devils to 10-6, and 3-3 in conference. Misericordia fell to 11-4-2, 4-2 in the MAC Freedom.
The teams traded early chances, as sophomore
Lindsey Scarmozzino had a shot saved in the seventh minute, and the Cougars had a shot ping off the crossbar.
Freshman
Tatiana Nieto deked around a defender, and sent in a perfect cross to Martins, who one-touch finish eluded the keeper and out the Devils on the board. Freshman
Ashley Paulino made key saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep Misericordia down 1-0.
The Cougars, who held a 10-5 edge in shots in the opening half, fired 14 more shots towards the goal in the second period. In the 54th minute, Alex Gallagher had a shot that just went high, as the guests continue to persue the equalizing goal.
Nieto had an early chance, but a sprawling save by the goalie kept it a one goal margin. In the 86th minute, Gallagher had another opportunity from in close, but another shot hit the crossbar iron.
The Cougars had to chances with under a minute left, but Devyn Anderson had a shot stopped by Paulino, while another hit the crossbar with a mere seconds left on the clock.
Paulino made nine saves in her second straight shutout, while Nieto fired four shots.
The Devils are in action Tuesday, traveling down the road to take on Drew at 7 p.m.
