HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 14, 2017) - The FDU volleyball fell in five sets to Stockton and the United States Coast Guard Academy during day two of the Stevens Invitational.
With the losses, the Devils improve to 19-6, and completed the tournament with a 2-2 record.
Stockton 3, FDU-Florham 2 (19-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 6-15)
With the first set tied at eight, senior
Rachel Catena rolled off six straight points to help FDU build a 14-8 lead. Stockton battled back and got within one at 20-19, but the Devils claimed five straight points, including a pair of kills from senior
Melissa Gaffney during the run.
The Devils dropped the second set despite fending off five set points, taking advantage of a trio of unforced errors. FDU battled back in the third, as junior
Katie Quinlan slammed home consecutive kills to build a 10-7 lead. Stockton used a 4-0 spurt to close to 21-18, but Gaffney had two straight kills to stop the run. After two Devils attack errors made the score 24-21, Stockton committed an error of their own to give the Devils a 2-1 lead.
Despite falling behind 9-4 in the fourth, Catena tallied 10 straight, as the Ospreys committed seven unforced errors during the run. Stockton took the lead during a 5-0 run, and a Sarah Walsh kill evened the match at two. Stockton controlled the fifth and final frame, scoring 12 of the first 14 points.
Junior
Lauren Harris had 15 kills and 19 digs, while Gaffney had 13 kills and 18 digs. Senior
Rachel Catena notched 23 digs, while junior
Marissa Lehnert pounded home 10 kills.
Coast Guard 3, FDU-Florham 2 (21-25, 17-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-13)
The Devils fell behind 21-16 after being on the wrong side of an 11-3 run by the Coast Guard. Harris stepped back to the service line and tallied nine straight points. Set point came on a booming serve by the junior, who was also aided by a pair of Gaffney kills.
FDU tallied 14 of the first 17 points of the second set, courtesy of four quality serves from senior
Amelia Vetto, who ended her run with an ace. The Bears crawled back to within 17-14 before Lehnert slammed home a kill. After a Bear ace made it 21-17 FDU, the Devils totatled the next four markers, capped off with consecutive unforced errors.
The Devils trailed 13-1 in the third before closing to within 20-12, but the early gap was too much to overcome, as the Coast Guard came back to get within 2-1. FDU fell early in the fourth, stumbling to a 18-12 deficit before mounting a comeback. Harris pulled even with six straight points, but the teams traded the next eight points to keep it even at 22 all. The Bears would tally the final three to force a deciding fifth set.
Much like the end of the fourth, the teams traded eight points before the Bears went up 7-5. Vetto continued to stay hot serving, giving the team an ace as they swapped sides. Coast Guard would eventually go up 14-11, but the Devils fended off two straight match points. A Harris attack error ended the match as the Bears completed the comeback.
Vetto had three aces, while Gaffney had 13 kills and 13 digs.
Courtney Conte handed out 39 assists and totaled 23 digs in the setback.
