DALLAS, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's basketball team had its 14-game winning streak snapped by host Misericordia University in an 86-67 conference defeat on Saturday afternoon.
The loss was an uncharacteristic setback for the Devils who beat the Cougars, 74-55, earlier in the season.
FDU-Florham drops to 16-3 and 7-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom while the Cougars improved to 12-6 and 6-2 in the MAC Freedom.
The Cougars shot 49.2 percent in the first and 53.13 percent in the second half, while FDU-Florham struggled to catch up, shooting 34.9 percent and 41.94 percent in the first and second respectively.
Misericordia came out of the gate with five straight points, which put them in the lead for the remainder of the contest.
A layup and good free throw from freshman
Kendrea Williams closed the deficit at 13-11, but the Cougars' Japriya Carroll sunk a three-pointer to kick-off a 10-point rally that went unanswered by the Devils.
FDU-Florham was led by senior
Alyssa McDonough with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists while classmate
Rachel Groom nabbed 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a pair of blocks.
The Devils covered some ground with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter thanks to a three-pointer from McDonough and a layup from sophomore
Kayla Croswell which put the Devils just six behind the Cougars.
While FDU-Florham took advantage of good free throws at the start of the second quarter, Misericordia was able to match just about everything. With just over eight minutes remaining in the half, Cougars' Carroll had another good shot from behind the arc to keep the Devils down by nine.
At the 5:54 mark, FDU-Florham found themselves down 40-29, but six consecutive points, including four at the hands of sophomore
Raven Dowling from the charity stripe, and a McDonough layup closed the gap to just five points.
Still, the Devils' effort wasn't enough as Misericordia finished the night 21 points ahead thanks to dominating performance from Rachel Carmody who recorded a double-double with a game-high 24 points and 14 rebounds. Carroll finished with 19 points, three rebounds and four assists for the Cougars while Justine Seely grabbed a double-double with an impressive 15 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and five blocks.
Up next, the Devils return home to take on Wilkes University on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. in the Ferguson Recreation Center.
